"Skip's Song" aka "Seeing"

Sixth track on side two of Moby Grape '69.

Written by Skip Spence

Recorded November 6, 1967.

Moby Grape is an American rock group from the 1960s, known for having all five members contribute to singing and songwriting and that collectively merged elements of folk music, blues, country, and jazz together with rock and psychedelic music. Due to the strength of their debut album, several critics consider Moby Grape to be the best rock band to emerge from the San Francisco music scene in the late sixties. The group continues to perform occasionally. As described by Jeff Tamarkin, "The Grape's saga is one of squandered potential, absurdly misguided decisions, bad-luck, blunders and excruciating heartbreak, all set to the tune of some of the greatest rock and roll ever to emerge from San Francisco. Moby Grape could have had it all, but they ended up with nothing, and less."

Peter Lewis rhythm guitar, vocals

Bob Mosley bass, vocals

Jerry Miller lead guitar, vocals

Don Stevenson drums, vocals

Skip Spence - vocals

Great song.. It's odd how the recording sound esp the drums really declined on this record and the following ones as well. Like a big jammy room sound… Great singing just the same!

Moby Grape could have had it all, but they ended up with nothing, and less." -- That's a powerful and sobering statement. The first two albums, plus "Grape Jam" are as thoroughly listenable and enjoyable today as they were back in '67 & '68. Great music, sad story.

I loved all of their work but somehow "Seeing" just rips me every time I hear it. BTW Don Stevenson and Jerry Miller are planning a reunion interview next week on Rock Cellar (dot-com) Both are still making music.

the Robert Plant version is awesome but why do we have to compare? Very different voices. I love Skip's voice though. He really does emote. Plus he wrote the song, that's why it's called Skip's song. He was an original member of Jefferson Airplane as well! (As in before Grace Slick)
