Charted at #93 on Billboard Hot 100 in April 1960. Toni's biggest hit was "The Big Hurt" which used the same electronic phasing effect utilized on this recording. It was an early experimentation with an unusual musical sound. "How Deep is the Ocean" was written by Irving Berlin in 1932 when it was a hit for Ethel Merman, Guy Lombardo, Rudy Vallee and Paul Whiteman. Original Billboard review: "Miss Fisher, who is still on the charts with "The Big Hurt," could have hit follow-ups with either of her latest entries. She provides a sultry belt to "How Deep is the Ocean", the pretty evergreen."

B-side is "Blue Blue Blue".

I once heard in an interview with Toni Fisher that the phasing effect was done by using two tape recorders and varying the speed on one of them.

Very lacking in quality all a mish mash. I think it's one of those songs either love or hate. I hate it with a vengeance

i understand the transatlantic tube effect sound ... but something more is added that is wrong ... its not your fault ... today was the pasts future and almost everything is wrong now ,... iii dont even want to say that .... but since 911 everything has been f^^cked .. iii loved the gimmick ...theres a reality problem .. this isnt the sound off the record

That sound was a gimmick used on some of Toni's recordings since "The Big Hurt" was a hit and used it.

i still remember this song played on radio luxemburg (208 metres medium wave) on the english service, so always by nature in a kind of phase, but this one was really phased. thanks for posting.

Hi: Thanks for posting this song! I didn't know they used phase shifting on anything other than "The Big Hurt." I even remember "TBH" from when I was a young boy. Pioneering amazing stuff. I have same on my rfreeform adio station: Surf City Sounds Plus
