To me listening to this song I feel it's Severus singing to Lily when they were younger and first entering Hogwarts & I feel like it's Lily singing to James when she first laid eyes on him at the Gryffrindor table. Still hits me in the feels to think Lily chose James over Severus but then again if she hadn't we wouldn't of had Harry.

Not only in the different writings, but also in the difference of voices, we can see (or hear) that there are three people singing. I think the first singer would be Snape, then, the second one would be James, and obviously, the woman would be Lily.

Yes, James was an asshole. But I cannot understand why people can forgive Snape and Dumbledore, when their actions got people killed, but somehow what James did was unforgivable. James clearly had no idea the effect his taunts would have on anyone. Snape bullied Neville, knowing full well how his taunts could effect Neville's self-esteem. JKR was right; Snape is no hero. I could never forgive Snape without also forgiving James. What Snape did was unforgivable, no matter how many lives he saved.

Actually, I've always felt that it was about both. Snape is seeing about Lily, while she seens about James. Also, I have never been a fan for a Snape/Lily pairing. I often feel that people romanticize Snape. People are willing to forgive Snape (and Dumbledore) for mistakes that nearly got people killed, but somehow what James did was unforgivable. James was an immature teenager who didn't realize what he did hurt others. Snape bullied his students, knowing full well how much it affected them.
