Moanin' Low

Words by Howard Dietz, music by Ralph Rainger

Mills Merry Makers, vocal chorus by Al Shayne

Recorded July 1929

Cameo 9235

"Moanin' Low" was introduced by Libby Holman in the 1929 musical revue "The Little Show." Howard Dietz wrote the lyrics and the music was composed by Ralph Rainger who happened to be a pianist in the pit orchestra. The song became the hit of the show and Rainger's first published song. The show opened on April 30, 1929 at the Music Box Theatre.

Mills Merry Makers was a studio orchestra managed by Irving Mills. The group is believed to have included Irving Mills, (vn, dir), Tommy Dorsey (tb), Tony Parenti, (cl, as ), Larry Abbott, (cl, as) and others. The lyrics have been slightly modified to reflect a male singer.

Trombonology Erstwhile

Nice low-down treatment of one of Popular Music's great torch songs. Always makes me think of the famous scene in KEY LARGO, in which Claire Trevor, as an alcoholic, does a brilliantly bad version -- for a drink, which awful Edward G. Robinson winds up denying her. ... The gender change in the lyrics actually seems untypical of the period.
