Mildred Bailey - They Can't Take That Away From Me (1940)

They Can't Take That Away From Me" is a 1937 song written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film Shall We Dance.

Personnel includes: Mildred Bailey (vocals); Alec Wilder, Eddie Sauter (arranger); Russell Procope (alto saxophone); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Buster Bailey (clarinet); Mitch Miller (oboe, English horn); John Kirby (bass). January 25, 1940

This is one of several sessions that took place under the direction of composer and arranger Alec Wilder, using 'chamber' instrumentalists

like that master of the oboe and Cor anglais, Mitch Miller.

This kind of production worked best when Bailey's voice was able to wrap itself around truly wonderful lyrics and melodies like "All the Things You Are," "Easy to Love" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me."

The absolute test of a great singer is when you sing along with them they make you sound much better than you actually are,and Mildred Bailey certainly passes this test. Thank you.

@freescorepaul Thank you too Paul! I absolute agree with you...Mildred had here worldclass musicians in her orchestra. This arrangement is a class apart...very stylish and in a way risky, using 'chamber' instrumentalists to accompany "Mrs Swing"! Grtz, Aad

I once had an old Rambler named Mildred ~after Mildred Bailey. She was a fabulous singer and I still love listening to her lovely voice.

What a wonderful arrangement. Comments on the musical ideas of the melody, but keeps itself behind Mildred's vocal. Mitch Miller was a surprise for me as well. I listened to him in the 50s and 60s. I kind of regret the abandonment of the early 30s swing style, but this is certainly one enjoyable performance. Thanks! Paul
