In my view, Mickey Gilley was at his best during his Playboy years...and, I'm talking about his record label...not his lifestyle!

Once he went over to Epic Records, the sound became slicker and more produced...too heavy on the strings (for my liking), and not enough honkytonk piano.

Of course, I'd be the first to acknowledge that Mickey enjoyed amazing success during his Epic period, so, maybe it's me who's out of step :-)

This upload is an example of the Mickey Gilley I like best.

I know it owes a lot to the style of ol' cousin Jerry Lee...but...hey, it was family tradition!

The track is from Mickey's 1974 LP on Playboy Records, "City Lights" and is an excellent remake of the "Lead Belly" folk classic, made popular to a wide audience in 1950 by "The Weavers".
