If you listen to the whole thing you would hear J in more then just that section. 1. it's him doing background vocals because he always did his own backgrounds. Akon did a great job with this remix with MJ.

Personally I think Wanna be starting something 2008 is quite a fresh and new perspective to MJ's popping tune. It blends greatly with the soul of the song, and Akon's vocals suit the song perfectly. Unlike the Girl Is Mine, which is a poor mix of Michael's recordings with a poorly constructed generic beat. The vocals and the tuneless beat dont even match! Will.i.am tries to put MJ's vocals which is clearly soft rock genre, together with a poor beat to make it a hapless dance number.
