Neo-psych outfit MGMT returns with a fuzzy new album that's got plenty of odd moments, but too few memorable ones.

What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

It takes a lot to the fathom this piece of art right here. Simple minds can't grasp it, and intellectual minds can't process it. You have to completely be one with this project and accept it for exactly what it is and that would be a masterpiece. Lol when I had heard MGMT was coming out with a new project, I instantly bought some DMT and the album within the same day. That may have influence as to why I feel so strongly about the music, however the message that this album withholds is even truer and deeper than I had originally thought upon my first listen. Great review Anthony, even greater album! Salute.

I-Review Music

I first heard the album, and I liked the first 2 songs only. Then, a few months later, I listened again, and I enjoyed it.

7/10 from me. I'm a massive MGMT fan, I even have MGMT posters and a t-shirt. I really am in love with their music. But the style of their latest self entitled album was not even a spiritual successor to Congratulations or Oracular Spectacular if you ask me. I think they should have released this album in another name or something. I didn't think it was a bad album (hence my score), Introspection and your life is a lie is awesome. But... I wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't say that I'm somewhat disappointed on the road that they've chosen with this album.

8/10, in my opinion.alien days, your life is a lie, cool song n° 2, introspection, plenty of girls in the sea, mystery disease and an orphan of fortune are GREAT SONGS. the other 3 "experimental" songs are interesting, and i like "i love you too death" more than astro-mancy and a good sadness.

Over time this has become one of my all time favorite albums but the first time I heard it I didn't know what the hell I had listened too, especially side b I was so confused I found it hard to focus on the music lol, a disappointing and confusing listen but like a lot of great albums it just takes time and repeat listens to truly grasp it, and after a few listens it began to unlock itself to me. I've owned the album for a year now and it's definitely become one of my favorites, I even like it better than congratulations

This album needs more than one listen to really enjoy it. First i like the difference from Congratulations and Oracular Spectacular and then i found the best in every song. Dark and crazy i would say are the words to think about the album

Nice review and album summary. Agree with you on Astro Mancy. However, I would overall disagree with your rating of this album. First, you completely ignored tracks like Introspection and An Orphan of Fortune. Both solid and great pieces of music. Good hook on Introspection and fabulous rhythm on Orphan of Fortune. But take great exception with your underselling of A Good Sadness. It may be MGMT's best song to date. After listening to that track over and over, at initial hearings was mesmerized by the sonic depths and heights put into that track. But now appreciate the great vocal work on that piece. It takes you on a journey of sound, a starry night roller coaster ride of life, where it uses the vocals to create an emotional attachment that soars and descends into a trough and back up again and settles into a middle easing at the end, with fading sonic pops and whistles. Certainly respect your views and opinions on this album, but favor this album slightly over Congratulations. This is one of the few established bands out there trying to reinvent and innovate with sound. Looking forward to their next release.
