Lyrically, it's one of +Metallica's best.  Forceful, direct; one of Hetfield's world-famous lyrical diatribes hitting all points with gusto, zeal and verve.  MUSICALLY, however, it's an awkward mess.  I get that they wanted to straighten out their musical wandering (seemingly forgetting that the "wandering" endeared them to legions of 'heads looking for something to bang to), but this is TOO "straight".  By this time, 'Tallica were playing by the grunge/alt-rock rulebook; severely tightening up the music/arrangements, lathering on a slick, glossy, saccharine production, and keeping the bulk of their radio/MTV hits to five minutes and under. They certainly earned the nickname "Alternica", didn't they?
