As I was told, James was injured in a jet ski accident or something like that and unable to perform but Kid Rock, who was on the same tour, is apparently a big Metallica fan and knows the words to all their songs so he volunteered to step in as a substitute vocalist. When "Sad But True" came up on the set list they gave him a nod and let him sing his cover version, "American Badass."
