Shirley Wood gulped down her breakfast

Shut the fridge and joined the throng

Margaret Beatty snatched the milk in

Scanned the news and went along

Annie Harris drew the curtains

Screwed her eyes up, had a peep

Saw the marchers, heard their voices

Making early morning noises

Stumbled back to bed and tried to sleep

Come with us, run with us

We're gonna change the world

You'll be amazed, so full of praise

When we've rearranged your world

We're gonna change your world

Shuffling through the cold black morning

Went the marchers, spirits low

Grunting greetings, grimly pressing

Onto where they had to go

When the sun came up, they brightened

Stopped to have their thermos brew

Annie Harris got up gladly

Pondered for a little, sadly

Then got on with what she had to do

So, come with us, run with us

We're gonna change the world

You'll be amazed, so full of praise

When we've rearranged your world

We're gonna change your world

At their target, numbers swollen

'Up the marches', banners go

Chanting, shouting out with leaflets

Protest for everyone to know

Sit in front of all the traffic

Harried, busy shopping wives

Try to stir their ostrich notions

Whip them up to wild emotions

Put some fire into their wretched lives

So, come with us, run with us

We're gonna change your world

You'll be amazed, so full of praise

When we've rearranged your world

We're gonna change your world

Shirley Wood was dragged still sitting

By a policeman from the road

Margaret Beatty had her face slapped

By a man she tried to goad

Annie Harris in the office

Paused in typing, thought of Don

Glanced again at his last letter

Died for others to live better

Brushed away a tear and carried on

Come with us, run with us

We're gonna change the world

You'll be amazed, so full of praise

When we've rearranged your world

We're gonna change...

Come with us, run with us

We're gonna change your world

You'll be amazed, so full of praise

When we've rearranged your world

We're gonna change...

So, come with us, run with us

We're gonna change your world

You'll be amazed, so full of praise

When we've rearranged your world

We're gonna change...

Surely it's "Up the marchers' banners go" not " 'Up the marches', banners go" which doesn't makes sense.

Used to love this as a child. Didn't understand lyrics but the song is incredibly catchy and exciting, and Matt Munro is just brilliant.

I have to share somewhat humbly (I hope) that having read all the kind comments on YT re this song that I am the composer. It's one of the few songs I wrote which got published - my proper job is an accountant. My friend Tim Harris - sadly now passed - wrote the lyrics and sent them to me in the post. He was office manager at Spode pottery at the time and fancied having a go at lyric writing. I thought the words were brilliant and composed the music in about 20 minutes. It just seemed to evolve without any real effort on my part and not a single word had to be changed. The women mentioned were Tim's wife and 2 ex-fiancés. When it was released, these three recognised themselves and demanded a share of the royalties. The tempo and 'feel' of the tune was inspired by Ray Stephens's "Mr Businessman" which was getting a lot of airplay at that time. I met Matt several times - a lovely man. He recorded another of my songs "Mama Packed A Picnic Tea". This is also on YT. The subject matter was deemed too controversial in those days to put out as single.

Loved the tune as a kid. It was Jimmy Young I remember playing it a lot. I didn't have a clue what the lyrics meant, but over 40 years on I realise it it must be one of the catchiest protest songs of all time.

Mr Matt Monro was simply the greatest male vocalist the UK has ever had, no question. I like the tale of Sinatra sending him a card when he was dying in hospital. The card said simply "Best wishes from one boy singer to another" and it arrived just in time.

I'm guessing this song is about the Vietnam War, Annie Harris' husband Don died in it, while the other two are protesting about it.

Richard Moore, who did the audio restauration and a lot of research for the "Matt Monro - The Singer's Singer" CD box set, was kind enough to tell me. The bass player's name was Frank Clark. Other musicians in that particular session include: Piano - Kenny Clayton; Guitar - Martin Kershaw; Drums - Kenny Clare; Percussion - Stan Barrett. The Discogs.com site has a short biography of Frank Clark. I hope this helps!

That's what sets it apart, as a major selling artist you would demand the best production of the time, unless you actually cared about the content. Then again, it sounds good to me!!
