This is a Marianne's cover of the love song from the 1964 film Umbrellas Of Cherbourg ( "Je ne pourrai jamais vivre sans toi"des Parapluies de Cherbourg). The composer is of course Michel Legrand and not Antoine Le Grand as the credits on my video mistakenly say!

Even out of sync you realise that she was a great singer. She even survived that frog Jagger!

@urdivine Yes, you are right, in French and other Romance languages, those are the stylistic conventions for movie titles and books: 1) italicize the title , 2) capitalize the first letter of the first word of the title, and 3) also capitalize proper nouns, but 4) common nouns are not capitalized . So , Les parapluies de Cherbourg. I think the love theme is referred to as "Je ne pourrai jamais vivre sans toi" when talking about the original version from the film. :-)

It is "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" from the movie by the same name which was translated into English as "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." There are other artists on YouTube who sing this song in French also. Nana Mouskouri is one of them and has a very beautiful version.

So would you say the title is...."Love Theme from les parapluies de cherbourg"? Slightly off topic. I never understoof why the French never capitalized their song and movie titles. I guess it is just a cultural difference.

no, les parapluies de cherbourg was the title of the film... the song was its main theme, the 'love theme'- i don't think lagrand ever gave it a french title- the answer to your indeed pertinent question lies in the fact that gimbel, the lyricist behind the song, was american (wiki him)- also at the time french films and music were huge, however they needed something identifiable for international audiences- precisely often the title- and anyway the song was all too quickly translated...

Good. That helps but my question was not clear. I should have asked "what is the title in French?" My translator for "I will wait for you" gives me "Je vais attendre pour vous". Is that the correct title? Or, is the title "Les Parapluies De Cherbourg"?

yes indeed- it's the 'i ll wait for you' from michel legrand for 64's 'the umbrellas of cherbourg' (where Catherine Deneuve supposedly sings, actually sung however by Danielle Licari)- it's been virtually sung by everybody and that's a great take from marianne faithfull- i like minnelli's and mouskouri's versions a lot too (the latter has sung it in numerous languages)- 'ne me quitte pas' is brel's song, also rendered superbly by nina simone-

The video is not in sync, so does anyone know if she is singing "Je ne pourrai jamais vivre sans toi" in this video, [not the audio]? or is it just any video combined with her audio of "Je ne pourrai jamais vivre sans toi" ?

This song is not "Ne Me Quitte Pas ". Does anyone know the name of this song in French? I remember an English version in the 60s.
