Thank you for your service to your country and for sharing your story with us! I've also posted the cake song by Eileen Barton.

Allan Patrick I will always remember this song because I was an 18 year old GI boarding a troop ship in Jan 1949 and a band was on the dock at Staten Island playing this. Many of us including me had never been anywhere before so it made you think. Two years later when I returned another band was on the dock in Brooklyn playing "If had known you were coming I'd a baked a cake". That was a wonderful experience right after seeing Lady Liberty as we came into the harbor.

As my father was at sea for many years this was my mothers song which she would sing to me as a child, So innocent and cherished times.

Wow, 65 years went by so quickly. Lots of sweet/sour memories over the years. Today she seems so young. Back then she was a "woman."

My grandmother Mary used to play this on her piano and I used to sing along with her

Thanks for posting this, it reminds me of my Mum who loved this song-even though she was an Aussie. As my Mum and my Dad left Auckland harbour the Maoris sang this as the ship left.

Didn't The Seekers record a version? But this is very pleasant indeed. Shame we missed so many good singers at their prime due to an unnecessary war.
