Remember well the first time I heard this, the Ritz ballroom Manchester in 1978, after the ubiquitous John Cooper Clarke and the Nosebleeds with an unknown singer called Stephen Morrissey, unfortunately didn't see the whole set as had to get the last train home (very punk !) a couple of months later I got to meet Howard at the Free trade Hall Alberto's gig where He was sat behind Me, checking out Devo I suspect.

Sounds like prog rock...

Great band. They dont get the recognition they deserve. I saw a comedian called Paul Foot on the telly recently, he looks like he is copying Devoto's look.

Great shame this is not on the OGWT box set. It's a good deal better than some of the things from the era that are.

Looks like he's playing an ARP Solina in the video, I can hear a very faint synth string sound in the background while Dave's playing the main lick on the Odyssey.

sounds like Tubeway Army with Buzzcocks and (early) Eno all jamming together! fucking classic!

Johnny Fingers

don't know what Devoto's pretending to play on that synth, Dave F is playing the lead line.

p.s. Definitely early Roxy Music influence sans the prog and glam very dialed down.

All great. Adamson, Devoto, McGeoch all best of the best. The great post punk bands were ahead of their time in a short lived genre. By the time the world was catching up to punk rock due to music business, (lack of) technology, format, New wave was the next marketable genre. Magazine, Wire, Gang of Four, The Fall, (early Public Image Ltd.) in their prime produced some of the greatest music ever. They are the blueprint for numerous bands today who have cashed in mimicking their brilliance.

@Gregg Wilson I don't think so. He's pretty competent.

I didn't know that Howard was such a virtuoso keyboard player! I would have chosen him over Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson in the old Creem Magazine polls. Dammit, I wish I could have my vote back now.
