Taken from Madness's third studio album '7' (released in 1981), 'Shut Up' is an extraordinary song, with its swirling piano and relentless silent movie soundtrack sound. Lyrically it finds the band absolving themselves of responsibility for a multitude of wrongdoings while running away from the police (also band members) on screen. Suggs features here as the tartan-suited second hand car salesman and striped, masked burglar, giving the video a comically sinister 'Clockwork Orange' feel. "Pass the blame and don't blame me". Indeed.
