To me that napkin is a metaphor for a person with simple desires and singular purpose. But I'm not sure if Liz is advocating napkin-hood, although the napkin seems pretty content with its lot in life. The napkin contents itself with serving the needs of Jeremy Engle and has no real interests of its own. And another thing about napkins is that they're easily discarded after they've been used. Hmm.

The napkin metaphor is the most beautiful one in Liz's catalog. She's saying that amidst the whole family's proselytizing about politics and government, there is a very simple person whose life operates on a much simpler level. The whole family espouses the need for Marxism, a perfect society, a non-reliance on commericalism (hunting for their own food). But sometimes all you need is a napkin. Let none of us forget our brethren when we seek higher meaning. Now go listen to my songs.

1st song of encore 1-22-11 at Metro Chicago. Liz metaphorically pulled the song out of her ass in responce to the ardent request of a young lady who had been at stagefront all night. The current band stood by dumbfounded as Liz strummed her way thru from memory and after after the first few lines regained her rythym and full lyrics finishing to great applause from the crowd ,band and ecstatic fan.

@coffeegirlnyc10014 She says the family's hectic behavior makes her feel insignificant as a napkin. However, all that Jeremy needs at the end is a napkin to wipe off some jelly from his face. So, she might be small, but she knows she's all he needs. It's really a very positive song!!

Awesome! One of the hidden gens from the Liz Phair eponymous album. One had to download the EP after purchasing the CD. "Sometimes all you need is a napkin."
