Originator of Rock Guitar ! Every time my Band "The Iridescence" in 1959-60 thereabouts played "Rumble" a huge Rumble would break out in the Dance Hall. Every time without fail. The first gig I ever played was an Italian wedding for a relative of my Bass Player, we played "Rumble", and the reception turned into an all out brawl. I saw a guy pick up a lady, over his head, and throw her out of a second story window. No idea how badly she was injured. For whatever reason that song made the audience totally lose their minds. Another gig at a Catholic School Dance, we began playing "Rumble", a fight broke out. A Priest tried to step in and break it up, but one of the guys fighting grabbed the Priest by the head and slammed his face into his knee. Absolutely Insane. Another gig at the Arlington Virginia Marine Base, we played every other weekend. When we played "Rumble", the Marines just lost it. I saw a really really huge Marine, so drunk he could barely stand up, take another Marine likewise as drunk, but especially small, the huge Marine grabbed the small Marine by the back of his pant belt, and by the back of his shirt collar, and began slamming the smaller Marine's head into the Grill of a 57 Chevy, non stop like a battering ram. The smaller Marine was unconscious long before the huge Marine finally dropped him. Another gig we played "Rumble" the girls went nuts, a fight broke out, the guys got pissed at the band (us), because their girls were googling us, and ignoring their Rumble, and they went and gathered an entire town of giant thugs with chains, brass knuckles, pipes, and stockings over their heads, undershirts & dungarees, waiting for the band outside ... I took one look at that vision, and knew we were dead. Somehow, I don't know how, the Drummers father, who used to take our band to gigs and haul our gear, went out and had a long long powwow with the Gang, and somehow we were given pass out of there. That was Rock & Roll. Without Fail every time we played "Link Wray's Rumble" a huge Rumble would break out. It was so consistent, we knew before we played the song what was going to happen, so ok everybody ready ... Link Wray's contribution to Rock Guitar ...

Opened for Link in Asbury Park NJ Sept 2001. He drove that young band like to be crackin' a heavy whip. At the end of the set the drummer destroyed the kit, kicked it all over. He told us afterward that it was the only way to get Link to stop playing.
