effyleven--TV cameras back then used what was called a turret lens setup. It was several lenses with different focal lengths. They didn't have to pull in particularly closely. The cameraman would twist a handle on the back of the camera to switch lenses while another camera was online. Later cameras had a single lens that they could zoom in, but the cameraman would have to maintain focus manually whilst zooming in. It took a bit of practice to do that.

The Liberace version is certainly very good indeed. As well as the good sound, a lot of the excitement comes tight camera angles on those hands.... these done before zoom lenses were available, so the camera really was close over his shoulder. Pretty intimidating, but he kept his cool on LIVE TV.

Would have been interesting to see the cameraman and his camera during that low shot of Liberace at the piano with the hulking tv cameras of that day. Saw Liberace in person back in the early 1970's. Tremendous showman, and pianist! Sad end for sure.
