"Theme from an Imaginary Western" by Mountain was a very influential song for musicians. So was Leslie Wests' overall style and tone, having huge hits.Even Jimi Hendrix couldn't reproduce all the overdubs and musical guests on his albums, when he played live. And Leslie West is still alive and riffing off it. What more can I say?

Hendrix was so far ahead of everyone else, it's not even debatable. And I have no doubt if he were still alive, he'd still be ahead of the pack. Not everything he recorded was flawless, but that just adds to his genius in my opinion. The closest guitarist I've ever heard or seen to even come close to being "flawless" would be Chet Atkins. Just because he wasn't flashy or avoided jaw-dropping licks doesn't take away from his mastery of the fretboard.

Probably... except that to Frank Zappa (I'm still waiting for someone to name ONE song of any consequence written by this 'genius') it might have been an 'hobby', while to the rest of the world listening to music, using the faculty of discrimination and thinking "I like this better than that" is just called 'life'... : )

Hendrix didn't possess Mclauglin's technical prowess however, he had something much better, namely, the kind of chops and ability to mesmerise and link peoples' heads in a cosmic, esoteric manner. That always trumps the technical Joe Passes', Segovias, etc. PLUS he was a master showman. In 50 yrs. no one will remember the artists you mentioned however, they'll still be trying to figure out hendrix's alchemy.

Right on! I hate when people talk about technical ability because it doesn't matter. What matters is ability to write songs, licks, riffs, and improvise. And a few people if any are in Hendrix's world when it comes to those things.
