I have yet to see someone do, in my opinion, Jean Valjean better than Alfie Boe. I watch the 25th anniversary now and I still get chills. His voice is not one you come across often, and he is absolutely amazing! Ramin Karmimloo is right up there with him, but Alfie Boe is still my favorite.

LOL So many people here are debating how high Alfie can go. What that top note was. Meanwhile, he spends half this clip explaining to Matt he spent his time working on the bottom of his voice. Not to show off, but because that's what the songs and the character demanded. That's a true artist. It's the story and the music. And that's why his "Bring Him Home" goes straight to the heart.

To set the record straight, Alfie went from TVR as a body shop apprentice mechanic to a year with D'Oyly Carte Opera Co working in the chorus on tour. He then went on scholarship NOT to a performing arts school but to the Royal College of Music where he got his degree having studied and sung opera. He then went on the National Opera Studio where he got his masters. Although Alfie hits a top C often (look at performances of Living Prayer, Che Gelida Manina) as stated by Alfie the top note in Les Mis is a high B at the end of 24601 which is the last bit of Who Am I. The note on the word Flight at the end of the prologue although startling because of the way it is sung, is not as high as a B. And to assume that a man who has a masters degree in music doesn't know what note he is singing, seems rather ludicrous. For more details read Alfie - My Story - it's all there.

+Oliver Turnbull Although he hit a C, I'm pretty sure that it's written in as an A. I once saw the show live and heard it like that (I could be wrong, of course, he may just not have been able to hit the note well...it's hard to tell because the only two Valjeans I've heard legitimately hit an exact note are Alfie Boe and the man I saw live).

um...he hits a high C in "who am i" as well.

If you really listen to stage versions (not concerts), that C is more of a yelp than a legitimate note.

@Nicole Coyne nono, not the bit at the end of valjean's soliloquy, the but where's he's like 'took the silver took my flight' after he first meets the Bishop which goes up to the high C
