Was there ever an Escamillo as sexy as Tibbett? That coal-black voice with it's ringing top, the grace and physicality of his movements, and themarvelous cape work. His singing is nothing short of magnificent. This clip is from th 1935 film "Metropolitan." It's available on DVD (but hard to find.) In the film, Tibbett also sings Largo al Factotum from The Barber of Seville, The Prologue from Pagliacci, On the Road to Mandalay, and De Glory Road.

And to answer my own question: maybe Ezio Pinza's Escamillo in the 1935 Met broadcast of Carmen with Rosa Ponselle. He added a sensuousness and even a bit of humor. But it was never filmed, so we can't compare
