Really wonderful to see this theme performed live at the BBC Proms 2007, just as if you were there at the original movie recording...

Perhaps one of the loveliest, most sweeping and identifiable themes in film music history.

In 2009, Oscar-winning composer Maurice Jarre, who captured the majesty of the desert in his music for “Lawrence of Arabia” and wrote the haunting “Lara’s Theme” in his score for “Doctor Zhivago,” died in Los Angeles at age 84. He won his third Oscar in 1984 for “A Passage to India.” Jarre’s musical style was noted for its use of ethnic instruments, and later synthetic sounds

Anybody think of Borodin and his "In the Steppes of Central Asia" when they hear this? Different parts of the world, I know but I think of everything from Southern Russia over to Arabia as one giant belt of Oriental-flavored exoticism. Not many people know that after the success of Lawrence, Lean came to O'Toole and told him he wanted O'Toole to play Zhivago in a new film he was preparing. O'Toole, still recalling vividly all that sweltering he did in the Arabian desert for over a year and his reputation already made, turned Lean down, which created some bad blood between them that lasted for years. Sharif, still struggling to make his mark, happily jumped at the chance and the rest is history. O'Toole said later that he chose parts based on whether or not they "spoke to him" and Zhivago just didn't seem to speak to him. __J Joe (also a composer of a piano concerto no 2 in c minor)

This is a surprisingly poor performance from an otherwise excellent ensemble. Maurice would be turning over in his grave.

This music makes me dream of desert places, clean sand, clear nights lit by a cast of a thousand stars, hand feeding my andromed drominoid - camel! Surely someone else could do the fighting stuff - couldn't I just stay in Feisal's tent and point a stick at a map?
