LaVern Baker doing "Jim Dandy" backed by "Tra La La," a 1955 Atlantic Records release. Spelled Laverne for some odd reason on this 78, "Jim Dandy" was one of Lavern Baker's biggest hits and without any question the first and best version of this classic R&B/Rock tune.

I'm sure that it was a solemn affair. But, the week that Brother was born, some of the most famous and iconic songs of the '50s were playing over the airwaves and on jukeboxes and record players. Tab Hunter had "Young Love" at #1. "Teen-age Crush" by Tommy Sands, "Day-o" by Harry Belefonte, and "Come Go With Me" by the Del Vikings were also on the Cash Box charts that week.

Tra-La-La was meant as the A-side, as a follow up to Tweedely Dee. Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler thought a similar sounding record would get more plays. Back then, Dj's got to actually play both sides if they wanted, and response to Jim Dandy was so overwhelming it became the big hit!
