From the 1977 album POINT OF KNOW RETURN. This was their 5th studio album.

In 2002 the CD was remastered with a remix of this song added as a bonus track. The differences are many and subtle but overall I think this is a "ballsier" mix.

This song was written about Albert Einstein. " I was always fascinated by Einstein and the fact that he went so far with mathematics and physics, that he eventually crossed the line into metaphysics and philosophy ", says Kerry. "He was getting at the fabric of the universe, and I thought, 'What an amazing man!'. I was so fascinated with the guy, one day I wrote a song about him. The interesting thing about 'Portrait' is that nobody seemed to catch on who it was about."

I grew up listening to Kansas , and have been a musician for over 20 yrs , David Ragsdale longtime violinist and I went to same school, I was a yr or 2 below him he was studying muic then , his mom was my teacher Carol Ragsdale and a music teacher as well,also Phil Ehart and Steve Walsh Ive met at a music store since they both live in georgia and come to see David who still lives in my home town ... they are nice normal guys with lots of talent

I always just sort of assumed this was about Einstein, and it's really neat to finally find out it actually was. I've seen Kansas twice and they played this song the second time. Wonderful song, One of my all time favorite bands, Thanks for posting!
