I hope his whole Johnny Cash meets Buddy Holly and Huddie Ledbetter gimmick keeps on working for him...

"Travis picking" was certainly NOT invented by Merle Travis. trust me, folks were playing alternating bass with their thumb and picking pattern melodies with their index fingers decades before Merle came along. I suppose he was one of the first white guys to popularize it though. Look no further than John Hurt's 1928 Okeh recordings....and he didn't "invent" it either ;) It is great to see modern artists celebrating these roots....I love them all.

Theres a video where he's trying to show how to play this song and breaks a string, he doesnt explain it whatsoever but it shows a close up of his hands. He's doing the basslines with his thumb and picking up melody and bits of the chords with his index. I'm not sure if it's exactly Travis picking but definitely some sort of variation

Here's the young guy who opened for John Prine. In this video he's doing an old-timey song, but watch his fingers. How can he get that many notes out only using 2 fingers? I couldn't find any more Youtube videos that show how good he is. It was a pleasure seeing him in person.

Any song that commemorates Joe Hill is alright in my book. "If the workers took a notion they could stop all speeding trains; every ship upon the ocean they can tie with mighty chains. Every wheel in the creation, every mine and every mill, fleets and armies of the nation, will at their command stand still." "I will die like a true-blue rebel. Don't waste any time in mourning - organize." Joe Hill
