http://www.myspace.com/judymowatt The beautiful and Blessed Ms Judy Mowatt, who is most famed as one of the I-Threes in Marley & the Wailers. 'Black Woman' comes from her debut album of the same title released in 1979 (1980 USA), and was inspired as a tribute to the Mothers of past times and became a source of pride and strength to Black women at the time (and still does). The first female reggae artist to produce her own album, it was re-released in 2005.

Black woman, ooh, black womanLight me up, troubled longYou trod one of life's roughest roadsYou got the heaviest loadTo be someone, to belongToo near mile and a half furlongDon't give up nowJust pray for strength nowFor you I dedicate my song(..)We are forsaked once in the plantationLashes to our skinOn auction blocks we were chained and soldHandled merchandiseHighly abused and ??And thrown in garbage binsBut no need for that nowFree us, stand on back nowAnd help me to sing my song(..)When you're fighting stand up for the right thingAnd not that which is wrongI heard Rachel mourning for her childrenWhen Herod and Pharaoh took their little headsBut just like Mary and JosephMother of Moses tooOvercame its evil devicesI dedicate my song for you(..)Black woman, ooh, black womanI know you've struggled longI feel your afflictionsTo you I dedicate my song

The talk of divinity has got me thinking that all races ( & genders & sexualities) are divine, all humans are equal whatever flavour they come in. This is definitely a great song though, I don't aim to take anything away from it as a song.
