J.S. Bach:

Mass in B minor, BWV 232 "Agnus Dei"

In this video:

Andreas Scholl, countertenor

Collegium Vocale Gent,

Conducted by Philippe Herreweghe

Harmonia Mundi

In part from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"The Mass in B Minor is a musical setting of the Latin Mass. Although parts of the Mass in B Minor date to 1724, the whole was assembled in its present form in 1749, just before the composer's death in 1750.

...

Due to its length--over two hours of music--it was never performed as part of a church liturgy. The first performance seems to have been after Bach's death, when his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach performed the Gloria section (but not the entire Mass) in Berlin. Large-scale performances of the entire Mass in B Minor were not staged until the 19th century."

Latin Text:

Agnus dei

qui tollis peccata mundi

miserere nobis.

Translation:

Lamb of God,

who takes away the sins of the world,

have mercy upon us.

You don't have to believe in God in order to surrender yourself to his voice

Sometimes when I doubt the existence of God, I Listen to this and it reminds me that God is alive and well, and very real!

Something about this melody so enchanting and memorable. Possibly the most "catchy" melody I've heard. I don't know what it is but something has me totally devoted to this.

I find some of the comments to be interesting. God or no God, it isn't relevant to the experience of this music. Bach's music is exquisite craft and art which is brought to us through his complex, difficult, and hard trials and tribulations of life as well as his simple and easiness of life; it is also brought to us through his dedication to learning music throughout his life: an example of his dedication is this truism: " In 1705, a 20-year-old Bach set off on a arduous, 400 km journey to Lübeck to hear the music of master organist Dietrich Buxtehude."We can sit here and argue if Religion has caused more problems or less problems in the world. While I tend to believe that it causes more problems, that is a belief based upon personal experience and information of historical research that's controversial. I believe in having a higher power that I understand. I don't need a higher power that I don't understand to be an explanation for what is wrong or right with the world. It is obvious to me that Bach was a religious man, given the accounts. He felt dedicated to a church and a God of his belief and understanding. So be it. And, thus the inspiration for such a piece as this is guided through such in tandem with his other life experiences. This doesn't bother me as a person who isn't religious.Let the Christians have their God of understanding. Who we to judge them? Who are they to judge the rest of us? We should all just try to be better people. Live and let love as well as love thy neighbor.

Sorry to complain, but you don't turn the pages quick enough, Mister Scholl is two beats or more into the next page before you turn it. Don't get me wrong, your site is wonderful, but this particular fault is a bit annoying. Please note I truly appreciate your earnest work in providing these masterpieces. Thank you
