I never heard of this band until a few days ago. Good song, but the singer sucks! He reminds me of an undertaker..

the 2nd instrumental break between the 2nd verse & chorus is simply the most desolate sounding piece of music i have ever heard. Sheer stark beauty....haunting alienation....

It's been really fascinating to read about other peoples interpretation of the lyrics. I've actually stopped the song just so I can add my take on it. I've always taken the lyrics in my own mind to be a story/lament about all the poor young men (on all sides) who lost their lives in WWI. I don't why but it's always struck me that way. I'm certainly not saying that's correct, it's just my interpretation of the song and always has been from the first time I heard it. And I think that's why it's such a great song; we all have our own interpretations on the lyrics and if it feels right to you then so be it! Ian really was one in a million, terrible tragedy that he took his own life especially when today, with modern medicine it may have ended so differently. And that voice!!

Joy Division music videos are one of the few places on Youtube where it's impossible to find rants about random shit on the comments. It's so good to find people discussing the meaning of the lyrics, talking about the band, etc...

"Here are the young men, a weight on their shoulders..."I'm straight back to when I first heard this; a young man who didn't quite comprehend the real weight on his shoulders. And the format is pure Anglo-Saxon; akin to "Where is the horse? Where the young rider?"Ian's vocal rhythm is at the hub of the language we're using: we now know it as the soundbite [clearest meaning, fewest words] or tweet, tho I hate that word in this context. We are born burbling in the cadence of our mother tongue, and this tune could be a lullaby. How primal !"We knocked on the doors of hell's darker chamber..."and here I am, decades later, and only just realised this is Nietzsche's Ubermensche singing. Poetically speaking, thus spake Zarathustra! "God is dead"; eloi, eloi lema sabachthani?..and the knocking carries on throughout.
