I guess you could say we have two meat balls here. Neither of these fine versions have been on YouTube before, and both are very different from the one recording (Asch Int'l 348-2B) that has been posted. Second take begins at 3:35. Enjoy them both!

Everyone who lived through the Great Depression was scarred by the experience. The Greatest Generation was sculpted by events. Thanks for posting this treasure!

This song brings back a flood of pleasant memories, of my youth...and in my Autumn the realisation that my next stop will along side the raconteur's 'baby' in Old Joe's Bar Room.

My dad used to sing this song when I was little; except, his version had the little man going outside and shooting himself until he died. Every version on YouTube I've been able to find seems to have erased this final verse.

My Mom said that I liked to sing this song when I was two years old growing up in Hawaii in the late '40s. I do not remember. So this is the first time I have heard it.

Thanks much. My introduction to Josh White and very likely to the blues, when I was 16. About 1959. Thanks to J.W. for helping to rearrange my mind.

Brings back memories. I heard this when I was a child just after WWII.
