To sing with an orchestra blend isn't an easy task, it demands an over polished voice because anything else would sound terrible. Serj Tankian of System of a Down, rock singer, tried this out and the orchestra really shows all the imperfections of his voice. The point of music like this or anything that resembles of classical music nature, isn't to bring out the lyrics, but the notes, changing harmonies and melodic line, he must sing like a beautiful violin or else the clash would be terrible. I believe the piece brings out a darker nature here, where as Nick Cave's version stays mostly in the major key and is accentuated to give more meaning to the words.
