Joni Mitchell - Both Sides, Now

from the LP "Clouds", 1969

Rows and flows of angel hair

and ice cream castles in the air

and feather canyons everywhere,

I've looked at cloud that way

but now they only block the sun,

they rain and snow on everyone

so many things I would have done

but clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now,

from up and down, and still somehow

it's cloud illusions I recall,

I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and junes and ferris wheels,

the dizzy dancing way you feel

as every fairy tale comes real

I've looked at love that way

but now it's just another show,

you leave 'em laughing when you go

and if you care, don't let them know,

don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now,

from give and take, and still somehow

it's love's illusions I recall,

I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud

to say "i love you" right out loud,

dreams and schemes and circus crowds,

I've looked at life that way.

But now old friends are acting strange,

they shake their heads, they say I've changed

weel, something's lost but something's gained

in living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now,

from win and lose, and still somehow

it's life's illusions I recall,

I really don't know life at all.

Such a beautiful amazing and yet, so sad, song.

So sweet of you. Yes. It rips me up, though I've spoken with people about it for twenty years, that Mitchell is hurt and now flattened by Post-Polio Syndrome. She has been so gracious in trying to say her professional farewells, postponing. It's incredible to me how much her musical changes but also her idiosyncratic poetry have meant to me from my childhood. I can say this only other of Dylan. It rips me up to know that we now have heard the last of her. Makes me feel a little weed on a tiny spinning globe in frequent darkness.

In my opinion, one of the most beautiful, profound and moving songs ever written - I'm not joking when I say I'd like this played at my funeral, there won't be a dry eye in the house.....

Even without the lyrics, the melody makes me want to cry. I love Joni's songwriting skills.

Could never get enough of Joni Mitchell from her folk years to the change to more of a jazz feel but it's always Joni's life and attitude and I love her so much and was fortunate to have a 2 hour conversation/interview with her in 2006 at XM radio on "Fine Tuning" Eclectic 76 but now it's gone but not forgotten. I miss and love you Joni! Be at peace always..you make us all happy!
