Yet another fantastic Jonathan Coulton song! Hope you like it! Please Subscribe too!

Note: I do NOT own this song in ANY way! This video is just made for fun!

"Shop Vac" is classified as a funny/sad song on the Listening Suggestions page.

The radio in the background near the end of the song appears to be saying the following (credit for this discovery to Blimix):

"... the case of two men who have come up with an idea for ads reaching a captive audience. The ads can now be seen inside public bathroom stalls. 'It may seem silly,' says..."

"A forty-nine-year-old, unidentified man went berserk last night, opening fire with a twelve-gauge shotgun in a crowded, downtown..."

Jonathan's comments in his blog about these lines: "The newscast is a segment about ads above urinals, and then another about a guy going nuts with a shotgun. It felt a little goofy to drop that in there, but it also gave me chills, so I kept it."

Gotta love those barely-audible radio broadcasts in the background

Haha, sort of, yes. Putting it that way kind of takes the poetry out of it. He's got the American dream, and he won't admit to himself that he hates it; the shop vac is a symbol for the cliche suburban lifestyle that has taken over his world.

I can kinda see that, and it kinda sounds like the singer dies towards the end of the song, probably when the police take him down. Though it could be completely unrelated to the berserker man on a killing spree. The radio clip of the guy going into the un-named downtown place with the twelve gauge shotgun comes after the lyrics about being "above [his] house and looking down." If the song is in chronological order, this guy dies before the shoot out.

Well, more like a suburban husband and father driven crazy by...whatever...becoming more and more reclusive, and finally snapping and going on a shooting spree and/or killing himself. (It's hard to make out the news report in the background during the last verse.)

What's a shop vac? I did an image search and got pictures of a portal vacuum. Is this song really about a guy in suburbia neglecting his family because he's busy vacuuming his basement?

Such a brilliant piece of songwriting! So catchy and peppy, yet scathing and tragic. Coulton is the most underrated artist I can think of.

Blue Sunshiney Day, Welcome To Tuscon, or Space Doggity are pretty dark to name a few. I can't listen to Space Doggity without crying, you should be fine if you don't know about the russian space dog program.

This song is a lot darker than his other songs. Excluding Artificial Heart, of course.
