The power of johnny dodds, heavy vibrato old-school clarinettist. Whenever I see jazz bands they leave out the clarinet, so here lies a tribute to one of my favourite clarinettist may his soul rest in peace! (This recording was made in the 1930's and is owned by "the orchard music" I intend no copyright infringement, only to share music of a by-gone era).

Well, in the still photo you see during this track, if I got it right (and I think I do) left to right is King Oliver (though I am less sure about this man's identity), Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds (the greatest clarinetist of the NOLA Jazz era), Kid Ory, and Lillian Armstrong (Satchmo's eventual wife, known prior to marriage as Lil Hardin). Notably absent from this photo is Baby Dodds, Johnny's brother and one of the finest drummers of the Jazz Age era; I would hazard the guess that his is the percussion you hear on this recording.

Johnny Dodds so underrated, what a sweet, unique quaver, power, pathos. Like Sid Bechet, he owned the instrument. Just as two notes and you knew the trumpet was Louis Armstrong, same with Bechet, Dodds. Bechet made a soprano sax as distinctive as the lyrical tone Paul Desmond coaxed from an alto sax with Dave Brubeck. Miles Davis said, "You can't do anything on a horn Louis Armstrong hasn't done." George Lewis oft evoked Dodds' spirit. Profound thanks for this.

King oliver must be given credit for that development as dodds and armstrong both started under the wing of oliver. Not to nit-pick but the man is horrifically underestimated

Hi, Interesting, your comments on this'vibrato technique' applied to reed instruments... May I assure you that this is one of the styles used on jazz reed instruments, & admirably so! The reedman himself 'Johnny Dodds' was well respected for the passionate mastery of this art form. I believe the depth of soul & feeling owed itself, in part, to this vibrato effect thus created. May I reassure you that without Dodds sincere & intimate individualism in music the world would be less bearable

@GoldenWestSignArts Safe... Sidney Bechet did play the clarinet but the recordings that your'e probably listening to are actually soprano saxophone. But another classic player. Both players were taught by the Tio family of New orleans who used sulfege to create "wonderful hearing".

@cowgirl14zz Listen to Sidney Bechet. I'm not a clarinet player but it sounds like he plays with tons of vibrato.

@lsdvine......... western classical clarinettists are actually living in a world void of the expression the slides and vibrato lend to us as players. Remember that an instrument has no mind, it doenst care how it is played as long as YOU like it do it!!!

@cowgirl14zz Dont believe anyone who tells you that the clarinet should be played in a particular way. Western classical clarinet is tight and precise and is traditionally played smooth, do this by clenching the muscle between your front and your back ('gooch' muscle) as you blow and keep it clenched alongside using your diaghrapm. But to get to the point...search for "epirus klarina" and search for "petroloykas chalkias" and you will see that...

I know this is jazz... but I thought clarinet never used vibrato? I play clarinet my self and I get those quiver sounds like I'm playing vibrato, I wish I understood how to stop that.
