I'm so grateful for a tenor like John McCormack who took the time to sing his words clearly and elegantly. I like Thomas Moore's poetry and having it sung by the best interpreter of his songs, is a real joy!

I was born in 1941, and one of the very first things I remember my parents playing on our Victrola was this very performance of "Believe me, if all those endearing young charms" –– old even then. I haven't heard it in more than 65 years. It brings tears to my eyes, as I see our living room and my mother and father, as they were then, and remember our listening to John McCormack. Funny how things you took for granted when young come to mea more and more as you grow old, isn't it?

I think Count John was at his best interpreting the songs of Thomas Moore such as this gem as well as "The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls", "The Minstrel Boy" and "The Last Rose of Summer".

I love the story behind this wonderful song. It is said that Thomas Moore wrote the lyrics in 1808 after his wife had contracted smallpox which caused damage to her skin. As a result she would not let him look at her until he sang the newly composed song to her outside of her door.

Since I was a boy when I by chance heard this melody, I have been deeply moved by it. And now this glorious production! I must say, the Irish do have a remarkable and magnificent gift in this realm and the loss of the culture that causes such achingly beautiful sounds and sentiments would be a devastating loss should it go extinct.

The reminders of civilisation are becoming harder to locate certainly, but thanks to YTube REAL music is being administered the kiss of life & is responding favourably, for WHO could fail to be moved by such as The Count's gems. My 17+++ yo. Granddaughter was deeply affected on hearing JM's voice [& Jussi Bjoerling's] & has been inspired to take up Guitar under MY instruction to accompany her sweet singing voice, bless her.

This is by far the best recording he made of this beautiful song Here his voice is at its freshest not like the 1936 version.
