As an American who is a big fan of John Maus, especially this song, trapped in bumblefuck India where I am forgetting how to have coherent conversations in English, this music video makes perfect fucked up sense to me. It captures my alienation and despair. FTR: The monkey-man is Hanuman, the leader of Lord Rama's Monkey Army. Rama (or Ram) is like one of the later avatars of Vishnu. Some really insane stuff, but like 90+% of the population of India takes this stuff very seriously. I'm pretty sure this video was a devotional video, sorta like those old Jesus flicks. You still see videos like this on Indian TV, although this one's extra freaky because it's so dated.

They're clips taken from various television series produced by Ramanand Sagar in the late 1980's/early 1990's. The ones I recognize are Ramayan and Shri Krishna, though there may be others in the fold as well. Well worth watching if you want an admittedly bewildering first exposure to Hindu mythology.

Why do all John Maus songs work so well with bizarre, obscure, foreign films? Pretty neat video, bud.
