According to Wikipedia:

"I Need a Lover" is a rock song written and performed by John Mellencamp under the stage name John Cougar. It first appeared on his 1978 album A Biography, which was not released in the United States.[2] It was also included in his 1979 follow-up album John Cougar[3] and released as a single, which became his first Top 40 hit in the US, reaching number 28 on the Billboard Billboard Hot 100 in late 1979.[4] Allmusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine has described it as Mellencamp's "first good song."[2]

The song also became an album-oriented rock radio hit for singer Pat Benatar,[5] appearing on her 1979 debut album In the Heat of the Night.[6]

The song is notable for its atypical long introduction of two and a half minutes.

Lyrics:

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

Some girl that knows the meaning of a

Hey hit the highway

Well I've been walkin' the streets up and down

Racing through the human jungles at night

I'm so confused, my mind is indifferent

Hey I'm so weak, won't somebody shut off that light

Electricity runs through the video

And I watch it from this hole I call home

All the stony's are dancin' to the radio

And I got the world calling me up here

Tonight on the phone

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

Some girl to thrill me and then go away

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

Some girl that knows the meaning of a

Hey hit the highway

Well I'm not wiped out by this poolroom life I'm living

I'm gonna quit this job, go to school, or head back home

And I'm not askin' to be loved or be forgiven

I just can't face shakin' in this bedroom

One more night alone

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

Some girl that knows the meaning of a

Hey hit the highway

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

Some girl to thrill me and then go away

I need a lover that won't drive me crazy

Some girl that knows the meaning of a

Hey hit the highway

This song is somewhat comparable to the film *The Return of the Jedi*, in that it has a *LOT* of intro, before the main event begins to really get started. By the time he starts to sing, you sorta feel like you do watching Luke & Leia rescue Han; kinda like things are over all ready; what do you mean you're not yet begun? (Similar to this is *Blue Oyster Cult*'s "Joan Crawford". Again, lots of intro before the singing begins.)By comparison, Pat Benatar's version of this just doesn't compare. But that isn't itself merely Brand X, of course.

For 2 and a half minutes, no lyrics at all. He should of left the first 2 and a half minutes on the cutting room floor and he would of had a better song. Man just lose that first long bit of elevator music with no message at all. As a kid it who couldn't understand or hear the lyrics it was a fun song to shake your head and dance to, but now that I'm way and can read the lyrics, I 'm really don't think the message of the song is all that positive or meaningful. A song about someone shot out on life with not much of a solid goal to do anything, trying to get his sexual fix again to forget about life until the next trick comes along for him. We've all been there, but now... looking back.. it all seems such a stupid and lost place to be.
