Joe South must have felt a world of pain after a break up in order to write a song like this one. I can feel his pain through the lyrics and they're something I can certainly relate to. As such, I dedicate this to my ex-girlfriend Iris. This was Joe South's 2nd Capitol 45, issued right before Games People Play, in 1968. Interestingly enough, just like Games People Play, the stereo mix of this song contains a completely different vocal track for the song. I don't believe this mono single version has ever been issued on cd.

Lynn Anderson recorded this song in 1971 where it reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart and #63 on Billboard's Hot 100.

The first time I played this single, I wasn't sure if I really liked it, but the song has grown on me very much since then. I began playing the stereo version a lot as Joe's vocals on that version become very reminiscent of Del Shannon's sound, to the point that I think Del could've issued it and had a hit with the song.

Joe South died on September 5, 2012. After I read that news, I put together a 4 hour long internet radio show for Top Shelf Oldies spotlighting 3 hours of songs Joe wrote, produced, and/or played on by other artists plus an hour of songs with Joe on lead vocals, including the stereo version of this song. There were so many more songs and versions I could have picked but I felt that I did Joe's legacy justice with the show I produced in under 24 hours time. You can hear that archived show at http://www.ramtownlive.com/Realdeal.html by scrolling down to the 9-6-12 post where you can download or stream the show while also checking out the playlist of songs that got played in the show. If you like the songs you hear, please check out http://www.topshelfoldies.org where you can hear great songs like them on live shows 7 nights a week and an automated stream of uncommon oldies playing throughout the rest of the day.

Normally I don't post the lyrics of a song in my video but in this case, I feel I need to just because it gives you a greater idea of the kind of hurt Joe must have been feeling when he wrote this song.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

How can I unsay the things I said to you

How can I undo the things that we used to do

Tell me how can I unfeel the way I feel for you

How can I unlove you?

How can I untie the hold that you got on me

When you won't unchain my heart and set me free

I can't unremember every memory

So how can I unlove you?

I'll never, never uncry

The tears that I cried when you said goodbye

No, I'll never, never unmiss

The thrill that I miss when we used to kiss.

How can I unsay the things I said to you

How can I undo the things that we used to do

Tell me how can I unfeel the way I feel for you

How can I unlove you?

How can I unlove you?

How can I unlove you?

How can I unlove you?

I see Joe South did a little over producing on this one, something he did a lot of and sometimes to the negative. I wish someone could have taken the electric guitar out of his hands for a few more songs and made some softer country songs because his voice would have been great for country for sure in the late 70's/ Ed Brice, Waylon and Cash showed what a baritone could do with country music, dam South could have been right there with them...I'm still crying over the spilt milk...
