From "Flashback" 1993

Joan Jett and the blackhearts

I'm on a dirt highway

The sky was streamin' red

I told you my rules

I guess you didn't hear a

single word I said

You tried to change me

What a surprise

Cuz now I see the tears

they're falling

And they're from you eyes

Right til the end

I want my way

Right til the end

Don't care what ya say

You knew the first day

I'm in my empty room

I had to turn you loose

Don't be like me

I don't want compassion

like I want the truth

Don't want to hurt you that's not me

The only choice I got

is hurt you or to set

you free

Right til the end

I want my way

Right til the end

Don't care what ya say

It's so easy to fall out of love

You do not feel the same

It's so easy to fall out of love

When one will never

change and I know

Right til the end

I want my way

Right til the end

Don't care what ya say

You knew the first day

Co-writer of this song, Jules Shear, has been my very favorite songwriter since 1985, when he co-wrote all the songs on an album by the Cars's lead guitarist Elliot Easton. It's called *Change No Change* and it's extremely good, but Jules's own albums are even better. Most of his income comes from others covering his songs. I loved Cyndi Lauper's cover version of "All Through the Night", but the Bangles's "If She Knew What She Wants" wasn't *half* as good as his original! He'd had a band called Jules and the Polar Bears, writing all the songs himself, packing exquisite lyrics in an unceasing torrent at a very high pitch. His masterpiece is his first solo album, *Watch Dog*, and he has written in almost every style, from acoustic folk to synth-pop. He is not well-known by the general public, but the music industry knows and respects him, sends struggling musicians to him, using him as a "song doctor". He helped a young Matthew Sweet with almost every song on his early album *Earth*, and to this day you can hear Mr. Shear's influence on Mr. Sweet's best work. Having said all that, I don't hear much of his influence in this song. It sounds mostly like Joan's music. I think she had the basic concept of the lyrics, but Jules helped her refine them into memorable lines that rhymed and fit neatly. (As a counter-example, "Any Weather" sounds far more like Dave Grohl's work than Joan's.)I hope Joan and Jules collaborate again! Jules once did an album of all-original duets, with women like Roseanne Cash, Paula Cole, Margo Timmins (from Cowboy Junkies), the legendary Carole King, and others. I wonder if he invited Joan but she couldn't do it. It would be awesome to hear my favorite songwriter and my favorite female musician duetting and harmonizing! Yeah, I'm kicking Kate Bush down to #2. Sure, she's a genius and all, but Kate just doesn't have the addictive, attention-demanding energy of Joan Jett! Thank you for posting this song, and thanks to anyone who reads this whole comment.
