...one of the best-loved songs ever recorded about the Civil War: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band. The song was first recorded in 1969, and was later covered and/or performed by Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Jerry Garcia, the Black Crowes, Bruce Hornsby, and the Allman Brothers Band, among others...

Joan Baez does a beautiful job with her version of the Bands story about the end days of the civil war. Thank You for the upload.

Respect for uploading it again. I don't understand why it was removed before unless it had something to do with money.

I know many people will simply say, "Oh well both versions are beautiful, it doesn't have to be a contest", and those people are right to a degree..... However, the narrative of the song is told from the viewpoint of a man from the South and I think for that reason Levon Helm, a man from the South, was able to tap into the soul of this character and convey it through his vocals in a way that Joan Baez was not. She sings beautifully, but I'll take The Band's version every single time.

An artist and her guitar. Genius: uncomplicated, undiluted, history-making, everlasting.

Joan has always been my favorite female folk singer, and I love this song. However, I believe the content of the song requires a more emotional sadness to be expressed. It's almost as if she is singing it to a generic audience for pure entertainment value, rather than expressing what the lyrics mean. Most large southern cities had been bombarded into rubble, and Sherman and other Union Generals had left a scorched earth swathe through the countryside.

why have some people taken cheap shots, and sunk to the level of name calling hell no-wonder wars start over nothing, grow up and just judge the song with a little intelligence, like Ellen has with her valid point

I was always more of a rocker than a folkie; but when she popped into "Midnight Special" that night (back when music programs were awesome) , I certainly didn't turn her off. You may not have liked her style, but you could always rest assured that she was genuine. There was absolutely nothing phony about this classic and gifted artist.
