"Mary Hamilton" or, "The Fower Maries" ("The Four Marys") are common names for a well-known sixteenth-century ballad from Scotland based on an apparently fictional incident about a lady-in-waiting to a Queen of Scotland or, possibly, to Catherine I of Russia.

Why must this be "literally true"? Almost no ballad is. It's a STORY, made up of legend/myth woven together with truth (not "fact" - there's a difference). All of you seem to want to wedge this into a history book, and by the way, history is written by the winners and is FAR from the truth in most cases. If there are "inconsistencies" it's part of storytelling. Get the stick out of your ass, please.

Joan Baez is to a large degree forgotten. But not by those who revered her as having one of the greatest sopranos of her era. Love you Joan.

I remember my wife bringing home SILVER DAGGER, the album with this tragic, but beautiful song. I played it scores of times and never got tired of listening.

The four Marys were the court ladies of Maria Stuart. They were following her in her every day life. They were four noble scotch ladies and they were following her also as she was a prisoner of Elisabeth I of England.

I came across this evening and remembered that i'd lost the tape it was on a long time ago. This song is so haunting and i do believe this is a true story and not a work of fiction. Will be buying this and more of Joan Baez soon.
