I once heard Dick Clark say that Jimmy had the "best" voice in golden age of Rock 'n' Roll. Without knowing the exact context, that statement can be challenged, but why would you do that? Jimmy had a unique voice, the sound represents the very best of "blue-eyed" Pittsburgh-not New York-Do Wop. (Compare Dion and the Belmonts for the New York sound.) Jimmy has lost quite a bit of range in this clip and, today, he's just a shadow of what he was, but for those of us who remember 1959 . . . well, we can only be grateful we were there to see it and hear it.

What REALLY sets Jimmy apart from the other lead singers of this time period is that he COMPOSED these tunes (except for Pennies) which WAS a rarity for the most part. Others may have written one or two songs but Jimmy Beaumont set all those beautiful melodies to Joe Rock's wonderful lyrics. Even though most of the original records credited the Skyliners, it was Jimmy writing and singing the tunes! The man can S-I-N-G! Way ahead of his time. Some of his natural runs still knock me out to this day.
