I never cease to be amazed by some people's negative comments. For goodness sake, Jessye Norman nailed it. If you hadn't been watching, would you have noticed what you describe as neck tension? It was superb. Jessye Norman is superb.

I sang this for a wedding years ago and had to learn German phonetics to do it. But I suspect that unless one is actually German, classical music critics (and wannabes) will not consider it lieder, anyway. So one might as well enjoy oneself while doing it.

I agree it is not what we usuall think of as lieder singing and I would not want this in place of Fischer-Dieskau or Ameling BUT IT IS IRRESISTIBLE and she clearly loves every note and every word. What a pity about the distracting visuals in the background.
