Jerry Garcia on Pedal Steel, and my favorite song, 'I Don't Know You' by John Dawson (R.I.P.) - New Riders Of the Purple Sage.

In terms of American music, the New Riders were the quintessential psychedelic country band. In 1969, there wasn't anyone doing what they were doing, With Garcia's sound on pedal steel and Dawson's great songs and imagery, they really had something special.

IMHO, the 'Riders' lost allot of cosmic discipline when Jerry bowed out. Lastly, David Nelson has been greatly over looked for his Country Guitar Fills that are so subtle but really beautiful.

True Mr. Whitlock -Jerry really wasn't much of a steel player, nevertheless, the album, the music, will live on and on.

Over forty years ago since this was recorded and nearly twenty years since Garcia died and people still arguing about weather he was a decent pedal steel player.Who gives a fuck!Far more important thing in life to worry about!

Thanks for sharing this gem - I've loved NRPS for a long time - hubby says he can always tell when I'm listening to NRPS on the headphones; my toe starts tapping, my head starts bobbing and I get this huge smile on my face; just can't sit still listening to them.

I love his pedal steel work on CSNY's 'Teach your Children'. Brilliant slide.

Thanks for posting! Probably like many, the first time I saw Jerry in person was with the NRPS because they opened for them so much of the time. This song is one of the NRPS's most memorable and it took me back to '70 immediately! It took a while for me to get behind this CW stuff as a teenager, cuz we was into that crazy jammin jazzy rock & roll.
