Songs versus BackupJeff, and most of the other steel teachers, stressed learning how to play backup if you want to get jobs as a steel player. That's undoubtedly true. But, as a bedroom/woodshed player, STUFF LIKE THIS IS WHAT I WANTED TO DO. When friends or relatives came by and said, "What can you play", I'd trot out my somewhat lame version of this. The reaction to what the pedal steel can do was priceless.

An unbelievably great player and the best teacher ever. I went to every steel guitar event he ever had in Armonk, NY. Those memories are irreplaceable. I'm also a light plane pilot and we swapped a few stories back then. Jeff had a version of "I'm not Lisa" on the "Wanted for Steelin" teaching album. Does anyone know where I can find that?

I wish he was still around. I need intruction bad 'cause I have no idea if I am doing it right or wrong, probably wrong. I have been told you have to play on one for two years just to be terrible. Beautiful song, very well played.

I purchased one of Jeff's very first albums and I still enjoy it today. He was turly one of the best teachers of the steel and there are thousands out there who are so lucky that we had the Proffessor to lean on when we needed help and he was the first to help you with anything that he could. I miss seeing him and beautiful wife at the Steel shows and hope that his lesson plans never die!

The most professional steel guitar version of - Last Date - I have Heard. It is a job to get it exactly right on the steel guitar. It takes that special feel and touch. Mr. Jeff Newman had it. Enjoyed and appreciate this very much!

Back in the summer of 1983, I saw Jeff Newman and Buddy Emmons together in concert. This still remains the most memorable day in my steel career. I really learned a lot. Godspeed to you, Jeff. I will always miss you, and will always remember that gorgeous red Dekley you were playing that day.
