The best thing that ever happened to the white "yeoman" of the South was the defeat of the Slave Power Aristocracy that they were duped into fighting for while the "Masters" stayed home under the "20 Slave Law." Of course, about 500,000 poor white Southerners died or were maimed in the cause of treason.

Some say that the war is still fought in the comment sections of the internet... Seriously people, like Sam Watkins said: "It is DONE". Stop arguing.

I am 60 years old. My Grandparents were 40 years old when my Mother was born. Grandad's grandfather fought for the Confederacy. Grandmother's grandfather fought for the Union. He was from Tennessee and she from Kentucky. They came separately to Illinois in 1910 to escape the rural poverty of the South. I give this family history to show I have ancestors on both sides of the Civil War.The Northern States ended the Union occupation in 1876 and went through the Industrial Revolution. The large number of European immigrants that came from 1876-1910 had no knowledge of the Civil War. Northern politics reflected that. Apart from pockets such as Birmingham, Alabama and New Orleans, the South did not industrialize and had no influx of immigrants. Its population had the same composition as before the Civil War. It is hard for any group of people to accept defeat and harder yet to accept that the War they fought was for an unjust cause. So the South developed the myth of the noble Southern cause for State's rights. All reputable historians of the Civil War today -- the most prominent who are at Southern Universities --- accept the historical fact that the Civil War was caused by the desire of the Southern populace to preserve slavery. Newly elected Republican President Abraham Lincoln attempted to keep the Union together. But Southern States -- fearing Republican abolitionists in Congress would enact legislation ending slavery -- seceded and raised armies to expel Union troops from the South. The South started the Civil War and it was defeated and destroyed every bit as much as Germany and Japan were in World War II.There is nothing noble about that. However, the myth prevails as the comment below shows. The comments confirm that nearly all pervasive political disputes in the United States are rooted in the fact that the South has never assimilated. There is one further historical fact forgotten about General Sherman's march through Georgia. He had only one railroad running from Nashville to Chattanooga to Atlanta. Its service was interrupted by constant Southern attacks. This limited General Sherman's supplies to ammunition. He was forced to seize food on his march from Atlanta to the sea because he lacked food supplies for his Army because of intermittent railroad logistical support.

trololololol And I am not a stupid American, so your attempt to insult me was as epically fail as your trolls. Does your trailer park have free internet service? Does your momma cook you grits every day? Shit, how do you live in your parents' basement in a trailer park, I didn't think of that! Damn, I give up.
