I expected this to be like Gordon Lightfoots “Tattoo “ . When I realized the implications of the lyrics I felt punched in the gut. Thank you again Janis for making me see beyond the obvious

The irony of this song is that on the one hand Janis can empathise with the victims of a society who decided the value of their life, while being a vehement promoter of the abortion industry in America that does the same thing to those who's existence is judged to be better extinguished for the good of society rather than saved and helped. It's hard to respect the faux emotion of this song as a result.

I like the folk theme to what is otherwise a depiction of a very dark period in the 20th century that should never be forgotten. Brava!

As I listen to this song a few times, I can hear such variation in the singer's voice - she tells the story with all parts of the song - guitar, lyrics, tone and pitch of voice, melody, drums, bass... it all comes together to paint a snapshot of part of a woman's story of a horrific event. It's a beautiful thing to be able to help people feel and understand, even in a small way, what that must have been like. Thank you Janis!

What's so poignant about this song is that, without a lot of angst-y fanfare, you can feel the depths of the subject's fear, uncertainty of her own mortality, degradation, and emptiness. A life with the life pulled out of it. All calmly written, as matter-of-fact as the subject's quiet confront of the terror she lived through so that she could live through it.

A powerful song about terrible loss. And the brand that is the stark symbol of the horror behind the loss.

this song absolutely sucks....what we have here is a cool breezy Hejira era SoCal acoustic song about...the Holocaust???

This is without a doubt one of the best songs ever written. Janis Ian is a legend!

dami1622: some artists appreciate how fans & admirers help promote their work. Jerry Garcia understood this when he supported fans in their efforts to record concerts. The Dead never really suffered monetarily from fans recording their sets & later issuing the bootlegs for trade. Some of the fans' videos of artists' songs are brilliant & well conceived. YouTube I am sure comes under pressure sometimes from record labels -- but, for the most part -- I think they try their best. As you do.

I happen to know that Janis loves this video. It would be the Holocaust Museum (Yad Vashem? Washington?)or wherever you got the images that might be the problem I thought. But I'm delighted that it's back. You can imagine what this song means to some of us. Thanks for posting.
