I honestly think that Jaco suffered from what could be called "Instrument displacement"- he plays one instrument in the way he wishes he could play another. D'Angelo describes his own piano playing as playing like a guitarist because that's how he hears things; as guitar parts. So he finally learned how to play it after years of playing his unique piano style. I think Jaco is playing a cello on his bass based off of his riffs but he's playing a style all his own. The man was a true inovator and it's why he polished harmonics the way he did and set a standard that every bass player succeeding him followed.

The strange absence of argument asking "why?" this improvisation was viewed by so many youtube users seems illogical, but predictable. Jaco's musical fame brings also a great expectations from the first time listener (or even a person who listened many times without inquiry into the nature of music), this improvisation is nothing more than musicians impression during that moment and time and was not meant to be an introduction into Jaco's musical and technical skills, nor does it show his composing abilities. Further, it is clear that one might want to go further and investigate "why?" as the cause, in that case I would recommend looking into both "Jaco Pastorius" and "Word of Mouth", as well as compositions that highlight Jaco's technical/musical abilities : "Havona", "Port of Entry", "Dark Prince", version of Dear Prudence, Mercy Mercy Mercy, Dreamland, solo at Ripley's, Punk Jazz etc. It would be even more useful looking into musical notation and do in depth analysis of Jaco's composing techniques and big band organizational skills. If all of this fails contact Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller and Herbie Hancock and ask what is a big deal about Pastorius anyway.

Its not really fair to form an opinion on the experimental style of playing based on these bootleg performances. Its in 480p, the midrange is almost nonexistent. I'm sure in the live environment where you can feel it, or even in FLAC, it would be a different experience.

i can tell he's extremely talented; more talented than i can probably hope to be ever. but i've watched a couple videos of this song and they weren't even vaguely similar, apart from all the harmonics and stuff, and it doesn't sound good. at all.honestly, the technique is the only impressive thing about this 'piece.' if your only defense is about how he's improvising, or that i don't 'understand jazz,' i guess i just don't get it. but honestly, i don't understand all the hype; i've heard of this guy ever since i first started playing, and i've seen him play REALLY cool music, so i think it's a bit ridiculous to say that just because he is good that EVERYTHING he plays is good. i suppose it comes from a quasi-spiritual realm of music where he is such a talented player that whatever he decides to play is beautiful because he could play beautiful music if he chose to do so. i don't know man. i'd much prefer to listen to something with an actual meter or tonality, harmonics don't impress me much anymore...

I got it, Jaco, and I loved it and I loved you! I saw you that 1st night you played with Joni in Sacramento 11/20/76 and you pretty much stole the show, dude. You died way too soon, and way too tragic. You weren't just the best bass player in the world, you were the best bass player in the universe. Someone prove me wrong, I don't play bass, either, but I'm an expert listener and I have excellent taste in music.
