When you leave for Ithaca,

may your journey be long

and full of adventures and knowledge.

Do not be afraid of Laestrigones, Cyclopes

or furious Poseidon;

you wont come across them on your way

if you dont carry them in your soul,

if your soul does not put them in front of your steps.

I hope your road is long.

May there be many a summer morning,

and may ports for the first time seen

bring you great joy.

May you stop at Phoenician marts,

to purchase there the best of wares,

mother-of-pearl and coral, amber, ebony,

hedonic perfumes of all sorts;

may you go to various Egyptian towns

and learn from a people with so much to teach.

Dont lose sight of Ithaca,

for thats your destination.

But take your time;

better that the journey lasts many a year

and that your boat only drops anchor on the island

when you have grown rich

with what you learned on the way.

Dont expect Ithaca to give you many riches.

Ithaca has already given you a fine voyage;

without Ithaca you would never have parted.

Ithaca gave you everything and can give you no more.

If in the end you think that Ithaca is poor,

dont think that she has cheated you.

Because you have grown wise and lived an intense life,

and thats the meaning of Ithaca.

Quando ti metterai in viaggio per Itaca

devi augurarti che la strada sia lunga,

ricolma di avventure e di esperienze.

Non temere i Lestrigoni e i Ciclopi

o la furia di Poseidone,

non li incontrerai mai

se il pensiero resta elevato ed una squisita emozione

tocca il tuo corpo e il tuo cuore.

Non incontrerai Ciclopi e Lestrigoni,

nemmeno l'irato Poseidone

se non li porti dentro, nel tuo cuore

se non è il tuo cuore a porteli davanti.

Devi augurarti che la strada sia lunga.

Che siano molti i mattini d'estate

in cui soddisfatto e felice

entri in porti mai visti prima:

Fai scalo negli empori fenici

per acquistare bella mercanzia

madreperle e coralli, ebano e ambre

ed ogni sorta di aromi voluttuosi

quanti più aromi voluttuosi puoi,

Recati in molte citta` egizie

ed impara il più possibile dai sapienti.

Sempre devi avere in mente Itaca

raggiungerla sia sempre il tuo pensiero costante.

Soprattutto, non affrettare il viaggio;

fa che duri a lungo, per anni, e che ormai vecchio

metta piede sull'isola, tu, ricco

dei tesori accumulati per strada

senza aspettarti ricchezze da Itaca.

Itaca ti ha dato il bel viaggio,

senza di lei mai ti saresti messo

sulla strada: che cos'altro ti aspetti?

E se la trovi povera, non per questo Itaca ti avrà deluso.

Sei diventato così esperto e saggio,

da avere finalmente capito

cio` che Itaca vuole significare.
