PTL I just discovered this group while perusing YouTube. Amazing. As a former jazz band geek I wish we had done stuff like this in church. I think this is the way King David would have written a lot of his Psalms if he was around in the Big Band era.

This song was played at the end of my sister-in-law’s memorial service yesterday. It may not be the typical style for a somber occasion, but it was totally appropriate as a testimony of faith in the goodness and sovereign power of our God. “Where, O death, is your victory? I agree that it is important to remember the original meaning of the song. However, Denver is presenting what the song means to him. Music can be interpereted in many different ways.

There is no doubt that these guys are extremely talented, but I must say that Horatio Spafford would not appreciate his song to be presented in this style. The man had just lost his wife and two daughters in death at sea. I think that there are some songs that you just leave alone and respect the feelings behind it. Obviously Denver and company doesn't know that background.

Not to take away from these guys or this clearly original arrangement, but this song was never meant to be upbeat. For anyone that doesn't know the story behind the lyrics, just do a quick wiki search. Sorry for being a downer - these guys are still a great band.
