Girls and Boys CD version of Ingrid Michaelson singing "Highway."

Lyrics:

On a highway along the Atlantic

I'm rifling through these last 17 years.

The radio waxes romantic.

It's lullabies fill our eyes with tears.

We don't say a word.

There's nothing to say that hasn't been heard.

And how you've grown my little bird.

I'm regretting letting you fly.

6 pounds and 7 ounces.

A ball of bones and flesh and tears were you.

Now your hands, your tiny pink hands,

grew larger than my hands ever grew.

We don't say a word.

There's nothing to say that hasn't been heard.

And how you've grown my little bird.

I'm regretting letting you fly.

I'm regretting letting you fly.

I'm regretting letting you fly.

On a highway. On a highway.

I've always felt this song was about meeting the child you gave up for adoption... Maybe that's just me.

Although my son is only 2 hours away, the heartache I think is the same. It's a beautiful bittersweet thing to see them grow. It's a beautiful song.

It's definitely about a parent taking her kid to college: On a highway along the Atlantic= They are taking the Highway to the college I'm rifling through these last 17 years.= Most people are about seventeen when they go to college. The radio waxes romantic.= They can hear the quiet radio playing a romantic song. We don't say a word.= They are silent on their way there. There's nothing to say that hasn't been heard.= They have gone over all the rules.

So going to learn this one on the guitar or ukulele. You know what I love? Finding Ingrid fans. It's feels awesome to know that someone else is enjoying these awesome songs, too.

Listen closely, you can hear it after the song stops. It sounds like it comes from Mickey Mouse! :)

Yes, that part of the song is on the CD. It's the sound of children playing on a playground-- at least that's what it sounds like to me lol

Is there supposed to be a thingie at the end that sound like it came from an old movie?

Beautiful song. To me it's a song about a mom seeing her only child leaving for either college or work very far away... Very beautiful.

@JessePowersMusic I always imagined a couple who had just lost a child. I pictured their tense and mournful car ride home.

I don't understand how anyone would suggest this song was about anyone BUT a child. "How you've grown my little bird" "6 pounds and 7 ounces, ball of bones and flesh and tears were you." DEFINITELY that's talking about a baby. beautiful song :)

The part about "a ball of bones and flesh and tears"... it just makes me tear up. It really gets to me, pains me to hear. And that part at the end, it sounds like children at a carousel, but it's so faded you almost feel like they're disappearing, or dead... Really quite chilling.

This song sort of makes me cry. It does indeed sound like a child she is talking about, mentioning how her little bird has grown, how big its hands have gotten... that's not necessarily the kind of language you use to describe a lover, but I can't tell you what was in her head. Regardless, this song is so beautiful and sad and lovely. It reminds me of how parents must feel, pouring their lives into their children only to have to let them fly. This tiny pink creature that you created is... gone.

@MissVixx when i heard this song i pictured what a parent would say who was perhaps driving their daughter off to college...thats how i interpret " i'm regretting letting you fly" it's more that ouch that parents feel when they see their littleones become grown and in a sense fly the nest
